088: A Victory is in Everyday with Sarah Renberg

From Elite Athlete to Elite Advocate

Hello Warriors and Battle Buddies!

Welcome to A BATTLE WITHIN, Episode 088.

Today Drew and Terry are joined by special guest Sarah Renberg.

Sarah is originally from Bethesda, MD. But now is working hard, studying and keeping cold as a sophomore at the University of Michigan. She is part of the honors program and a research assistant  in the Neuro trauma lab.

Sarah was a high level Ice Hockey player through her youth and had dreams of playing in college, but unfortunately lost her hockey career due to a head injury while playing as a sixteen year old. We will learn about what this was like and the changes in her life that it required.

Like so many folks we get to speak to Sarah had to reinvent herself and in doing so she has become a significant advocate in the TBI community using her personal experience offering an athlete’s perspective.

Between High School and college Sarah took a gap year to heal further and help start the Headway Foundation. The Headway Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to promote a safer sports culture, provide resources for patients, and enhance concussion evaluation protocols and accessibility.

Sarah spends some of her free time working in Education and Research at the Headway Foundation, but has moved to an advisory role now due to school.

In addition, she is becoming quite the sophisticated speaker as she has had quite a few opportunities to share her story in this format as well.

We are going to get to know Sarah a bit and learn about some of the cool things she has been involved in and a little about what it’s like to get a charitable organization going.
